Residential multi-sport court for Codie Taylor

Built for performance in a residential setting

This Christchurch project for All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor combines a high-performance basketball court with surrounding artificial turf to create a fully integrated residential training and recreation space.

Designed to support both active use and everyday living, the brief was to deliver a surface that performs consistently, holds up under regular use, and integrates naturally into a home environment.

At the centre of the design is Sportsplay’s Stamina 15mm sports turf system, selected for its durability, consistent ball response, and suitability for high-use environments. The shorter pile height and dense yarn structure provide reliable traction and predictable play, making it well suited for both casual use and more structured activity.

The inclusion of an integrated putting hole within the court, with a removable cover system, adds versatility without compromising the primary performance of the surface.

Designed to handle Christchurch conditions

Christchurch conditions were a key consideration throughout the design. Temperature variation, UV exposure, frost, and seasonal moisture all influence how a surface performs over time, particularly in a high-use residential environment.

To ensure consistent usability year-round, both turf systems are fully permeable, allowing water to drain efficiently through the surface and into the base layers below. This helps minimise water retention during heavy rainfall and supports reliable performance through wetter winter months.

Performance is driven not just by the surface, but by the construction beneath it. Landscape areas were prepared using compacted AP20 and crusher dust to create a stable, free-draining foundation, while additional technology such as CoolTouch helps reduce heat retention and improve comfort during warmer conditions.

Durability has been built into every layer, ensuring the surface maintains its structure, performance, and appearance over time.

Stamina

World class artificial turf from Sportsplay, engineered for performance, durability, and player safety. 9 colours shown. Isolated on a white background.

The basketball court was constructed using Sportsplay’s Stamina 15mm sports turf system, designed for multi-use sporting applications and high-traffic environments.

To achieve the performance required for basketball, the surface was installed over a concrete foundation. This provides the consistent hardness, structural integrity, and true ball response needed for reliable gameplay. Compared to aggregate bases, concrete delivers a more accurate and stable playing surface, particularly where predictability is critical.

The Stamina 15mm turf softens the feel of the court compared to exposed concrete alone, reducing harshness underfoot while maintaining performance.

Surrounding the court, Eden 40mm landscape turf was used to create a softer, more visually cohesive environment. Its natural colour blend and dense structure help integrate the sports surface into the broader residential setting, while remaining practical for everyday use.

Court markings were professionally cut and inlaid directly into the turf, providing clean lines, accurate dimensions, and a more durable finish compared to painted alternatives.

Integration of sport and lifestyle

A key element of this project was combining performance surfaces with everyday use.

The integration of a putting hole within the basketball court, with a removable cover system, adds versatility without compromising the primary function of the space. The surrounding landscape turf provides a natural transition between active and passive areas, allowing the space to function as both a recreational court and a usable backyard.

This balance allows the surface to perform like a dedicated sports facility, while still feeling connected to the home environment.

The result is a high-performance residential sports space designed for durability, consistency, and long-term use — a surface that supports activity, handles heavy use, and continues to perform without compromising how the space is lived in.
